How to ride the electric skateboard

by Dreamer Wong on Aug 26, 2022

Is it easy to ride an electric skateboard? If you are a beginner of electric skateboard, you will ask this question before you buy it. At first glance, electric skateboards and traditional skateboards appear to be nearly identical. But e-skates are powered by electricity. Therefore, riding an electric board is faster than regular skateboard riding.

Electric skateboards are relatively easy to ride as long as you keep your riding progression slow and don’t push yourself and your board too hard.

So, without further ado, let’s jump into this comprehensive step-by-step guide!

Step 1. Protect Yourself

Well-fitted helmets, wrist guards, elbow pads, and knee pads are must-have sports gear for skateboarders to keep you safe while on a ride.

Step 2. Check The Settings On Your Board

Always check your skateboard before riding it, make sure those trucks and screws are tight and in good condition.

Check the charge level of your battery before you start riding and make sure it has enough charge to last for the duration of your planned ride.

Step 3. Stand On The Electric Skateboard

Regular footed means your left foot is in front and your right foot is in back; goofy footed means that your right foot is in front and your left foot is in back.

Regular and goofy are the two main stances. There is no “correct” position; instead, choose the most comfortable and stable one for you. If you’ve ever skateboarded before, you’re undoubtedly already familiar with natural posture.

Hold the remote wheel back to hold the electric skateboard in place, step on your board with your front foot first then carefully lift your rear foot on the deck.

Where you place your feet relative to the wheels will depend on the size of the board and what feels comfortable to you. Lastly, always ride with your knees slightly bent, This will bring your center of gravity lower and concentrate your weight towards your hips rather than towards your upper body.  In this position, you are less likely to overbalance and fall off your board.

Step 4. Accelerate An Electric Skateboard

Keep your balance on the electric skateboard according to your usual stance. Put the center on your front foot, and keep your back foot steady, Start the motors gradually on the slowest setting when you’re ready. If you feel uncomfortable, switch up your stance.

Step 5. Make Turns On Electric Skateboard

Shift your weight according to the direction you wish to turn towards. To make a turn shift your weight either to your toes or heels. If you wish to turn right as a regular skater lean your weight towards your toes. If you wish to turn left, shift your weight towards your heels. The opposite is true for goofy-footers, right turns heelside and left turns toeside.

Don’t lean back if you feel like you’re about to fall forward; the board will blast out from beneath you. Lean forward into the turn by bending your knees even more.

Step 6. Braking The Electric Skateboard

If you brake suddenly or make an emergency brake, you will fall off the skateboard and may be injured. So, if you want to stop, please brake in advance and slowly. Lean back slightly, as you brake, your weight will immediately transfer forward. That movement is compensated for by leaning back.

Place your weight on your back foot, relax your front foot, and then slowly start to brake the controller. Bend your knees slightly and ensure that your front foot is sturdy and rigid. Lightly press your rear foot into the ground, gradually increasing pressure as you begin to slow down.
